Possible fix for error 80029564 when trying to install PS3 demos [UPDATED]
I must admit, I’m new to the Sony Playstation 3. I’ve had an Microsoft Xbox 360 for a while now, but the PS3 is something I’m still getting used to. I like it, just having some growing pains.
After setting up the PS3, getting online was easy so things started great.
Browsing the network? Easy.
Downloading demos? Easy.
Installing and playing demos? Not going so well.
For some reason I was able to download demos just fine (or at least it looked like things were going fine), but when it came time to install them something just wasn’t working.
An error occurred while trying to install: 80029564
Not all demos, just the one I really, really wanted to play right now–the new Ratchet and Clank demo.
Maybe it was a corrupt download?
I deleted the download and downloaded it again, but the same thing happened.
After searching the web I came up with something to try:
- Configure the PS3 to use a static IP address instead of one automatically assigned by the router
- Open up private and public UDP ports 3658 on the router.
How to do this will vary somewhat depending on what router you have. I’m currently using an Apple Airpot Extreme Base Station, so the steps in here are what I followed.
If you have trouble making these changes to your router, a quick Google search should help you out.
So did it work? I’m download the demo again right now and will update this post when I find out. Should it work? I’m not sure how exactly it would, but what the heck–worth a shot…
UPDATE: Well, that didn’t work. I also tried adding the IP that the PS3 is using in a DMZ, enabling a bunch of ports I found here, and still same error with the “Ratchet and Clank” and “Uncharted” demos.
That same link also has a list of Playstation 3 error codes…error 80029564 means “Downloaded Game will not install - Cause unknown”. That’s helpful (not).
Maybe these demos aren’t compatible with something that was changed in the PS3’s 2.1 firmware update?
Someone here suggested that it can mean that the server for a particular game is undergoing maintenance and to try again later.
Someone else here suggested that its a problem with doing a background download, so I guess I’ll try it again without doing it in the background and see what happens.
If I ever get this working I’ll update this post…
UPDATE 2: SUCCESS! My conclusion at this point is that there is a problem with performing downloads in the background. After deleting the demos that were giving me trouble I went back to the Playstation Store and downloaded the demos, but didn’t click “Perform in Backgound” and they downloaded and installed just fine.
Hopefully this info will help others that may run into this problem. Leave the router settings alone (assuming you’re able to get online already, of course) and download WITHOUT doing it in the background and just wait for it.
If you still have the same problem, then try changing your router settings and see if that help, just write down what your original settings were in case you need to go back to them.
UDPATE 3: A week later and this still seems to work great!
