In a not so surprising move, Sony has decided to stop production of rear-project TV’s and instead focus on LCD and OLED technology.
Does that mean there will be no more DLP, LCOS, or 3LCD televisions or projectors?
(Wow…never thought about how many acronyms there are in television technology.)
Yes and no.
I’ve seen conflicting reports about this, sometimes in the same story. What I believe to be true is that Sony will continue production in order to meet all back orders of DLP and LCOS televisions (including the SXRD) and after that the three production lines used for these will stop and the company will focus more on LCD.
Have you seen elsewhere that Sony will continue to product and sell the SXRD and 3LCD?
I have too.
I’ve also seen a quote that Sony will continue to sell its SXRD and 3LCD televisions until they are sold out and “after that, we’re moving all Bravia LCD.”
Believe what you want I suppose until more news comes out, but LCD and plasma is what consumers want, and OLED is what many consumers don’t know they want yet, so it makes sense that Sony would focus more on LCD and OLED, especially with all of their competitors moving in the same direction.
Front projectors (what you see in conference rooms projecting a computer image onto a movie screen) are a different story and I wouldn’t expect Sony to leave that market, especially with the announcement of a new LCOS-based projector, the VPL-VW40, that will likely be shown off at CES 2008.
