Is Canon working on new SED TV technology?

On December 11, 2007, I posted here that SED televisions were still in trouble and that Canon was reportedly stopping work on technology that would have made manufacturing of SED TV’s less expensive.

Was that the end for SED TV’s? Maybe not.

This is still a rumor right now, but if this story at Bloomberg is correct, Canon is planning on developing their own SED television technology that could be used to finally bring SED televisions to market.

As you might remember, the whole reason for the [most recent] delay with SED TV’s is a long running patent dispute with Nano-Proprietary.

If Canon is able to develop their own technology that wouldn’t be in violation of any Nano-Proprietary patents, SED televisions could finally hit the market.

But would it be too little too late?

If SED’s would have hit in 2007 they might have had a decent chance, but with nearly all of their competitors turning their attention to LCD’s and/or OLED’s, could SED really have a future now? Time will tell, I suppose.
