Google’s Android hacked to run on devices with ARMv5TE chip

android_hackedNo official devices running Google’s Android are expected until the end of 2008, but that hasn’t stopped some enterprising hackers from finding a way around that.

After some poking around (technical term) they discovered that any device with the ARMv5TE CPU with adequate RAM and Flash should be able to run Android right now.

So far several devices by Sharp have successfully be able to run the OS:

  • SL-C760
  • C3000M
  • SL-C3000 series
  • SL-6000

Its not as easy as just double-clicking on an installer, but it also doesn’t look like it would be the most difficult thing in the world either if you stick to the instructions.

Speaking of, Engadget has posted links to an overview of Android hacks here, instructions for the Sharp Zaurus SL-C760 here, and instructions for the Sharp SL-C3000 series here.

Want to see it in action? They’ve also got a couple videos here.
