Sony discontinuing 20GB and 60GB PS3 in Japan, ends PS2 backwards compatibility

Sony has announced that they will be dropping the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3’s in Japan once the final shipments go out at the end of this month.

Those two models, the 20GB and 60GB versions, are the original ones that first launched in Japan in November, 2006.

Once those units are all sold, the only PS3 left on the market in Japan will be the 40GB version, which is cheaper to produce and runs cooler. So quiet you can barely hear it running (I have one at home and if not for the power light you wouldn’t know its running…pretty different from the Xbox 360…you ALWAYS know when its turned on).

The downside is that the 40GB version no longer is backwards compatible with Playstation 2 titles.
