Toshiba has send out a press release announcing that they are dropping the retail price of their three HD DVD players. As of January 13, the MSRP of the 1080i capable HD-A3 drops to $149.99, the 1080p capable HD-A30 drops to $199.99, and the high-end HD-A35 drops to $299.99.

According to the press release, the price drop is “to meet the potential demand for HD DVD players in the U.S. market.”

Toshiba will also “execute an extended advertising campaign that will further enhance consumer awareness of the benefits of HD DVD and drive sales to retail among potential customers.”

Maybe if they can show growth in player and disc sales over the next couple months some studios will come back to the dying format? But with the current state of things, who would buy an HD DVD player right now if they’ve been following the news?
