According to Stephane Maes, VP of Smartphone Product Marketing for Palm, the next version of their Palm operating system won’t be released until early 2009.
So what will Palm be doing for the rest of the year?
More of the same, I imagine.
A new model number slapped onto more or less the same smartphone.
Palm stopped innovating long ago, and I wouldn’t expect that to change this year.

Note to Palm: releasing the Centro in Pink isn’t innovative.
So what about the mystery product they alluded to when talking about their second quarter financials? Were they referring to the next Palm OS? Is there any reason to believe that Palm can still bring it?
Maybe Palm could:
- License their name out to some smaller smartphone designer looking for a quick path to brand recognition
- Partner with Microsoft and help develop a Zune phone…then blame Microsoft if it doesn’t work out so well
- Release the Foleo and price it at $199 (yeah, yeah, I know…but at least its not another smartphone and at this price it would sell)
- Downsize the company and prep it for buyout
