Sun announced today that it will be acquiring MySQL in a $1 billion deal, giving it two things:
1. Distribution deals with Dell, IBM and Intel.
2. A head on battle with Oracle and Microsoft in the database market.
MySQL has quite a following, but its open source and most users do not purchase support contracts or training, so maybe they plan to try and convert more of these users into paying customers?
Sun hopes to have the deal finalized by the end of its third fiscal quarter or beginning of its forth.
Maybe Sun has a plan…
