Before I even had a chance to blog about the rumor that Sony might be discontinuing the 80GB Playstation 3, Best Buy goes ahead and more or less confirms it.
The 80GB Playstation 3 has been removed from the Best Buy site, so it seems safe to assume that they have stopped selling it, which is a decent indication that it’s been discontinued.
The 80GB is/was backwards compatible with Playstation 2 games but the 40GB is not, so if you plan on buying a Playstation 3 and need that backwards compatibility it sounds like you might want to go track down an 80GB system while you still can.
Maybe this is preparation for the ceramic white version hitting retail and a price drop on the black 40GB version?
