Palm closing all retails stores, paying out Treo owners

palm_retail_stores_ripBad news for Palm fans–looks like the rumor from yesterday is correct but didn’t quite go far enough.

Palm will be closing all stores, including those in airports, by the end of the quarter. That adds up to 34 stores today–8 Palm-branded stores and 26 stores at various airports.

From a company statement about the decision:

“We continue to focus our company around core business initiatives and are consolidating more resources behind fewer programs in order to compete most effectively and build world-class, category-defining mobile solutions. We have therefore made the decision to close our retail stores.”

In a separate announcement, Palm announced that they will also be offering cash rebates on new Palm smartphones if you have a Treo 600 or 650 that has been repaired or replaced at least twice. They will also repair any Treo 600 or 650 that is out of warranty.

This comes as the result of a class-action suit filed against Palm in 2005.
