Jodi Sally, VP of Marketing at Toshiba, confirmed that Toshiba will be running a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl to try and reinvigorate support for its HD DVD high-definition disc format, with a focus on their HD-A3, HD-A30 and HD-A35 players which have recently received substantial price reductions.
It is estimated that the spot may have cost as much as $2.7 million.
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) considered running an ad but decided against it.
Andy Parsons, spokesperson for the BDA, said, “I certainly admire [Toshiba's] chutzpah…they can certainly choose to do was they please with their marketing. Running a Super Bowl ad is not likely to convince consumers that HD DVD will win the format war.”
Some are considering this the final chance for the ailing format. Personally I wish it weren’t so, but it’s hard to not see it that way.
