In 2005 Peter Jackson, director of the three Lord of the Rings films, sued New Line over “financial anomalies,” believing New Line was holding back on money owed him.
The lawsuit was finally resolved in December, 2007, and it was announced that New Line would be financing two Lord of the Rings prequels and Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh would serve as Execute Producers. The two films will be a live-action version of The Hobbit and a new sequel yet to be written.
That was great news for many Lord of the Rings fans, but who would be the director?
Many assumed that it would be Peter Jackson, but Jackson says that he has no time due to other commitments.
Directing the two Hobbit films will be Guillermo del Torro, director of (among other things) Pan’s Labyrinth.
The two Hobbit films will be shot simultaneously and are set to go into production next year with an expected release in 2010 for The Hobbit and 2011 for its sequel.
