Amazon announced today that they will be acquiring Audible Inc., the “leading provider of premium digital spoken word audio content.”

“Audible.com offers the best customer experience, the widest content selection and the broadest device compatibility in the industry,” said Steve Kessel, Amazon.com’s senior vice president for worldwide digital media. “Working together, we can introduce more innovations and bring this format to an even wider audience.”

The deal is reportedly worth $300 million and is expected to be done by the second quarter of this year.

Audible is most widely known for their extensive collection of audiobooks, though they also have audio versions of newspapers and magazines, television and radio programs, and some original content.

As some of you may know, Audible is the source of the audiobooks found in Apple’s iTunes so it will be interesting to see if this changes in the coming months.
