Dog barks decoded, six types found

dog_barkingResearchers at the University of Budapest have just concluded a study of dog barks. After analyzing more than 6,000 barks, researchers have concluded that it is possible for a computer to analyze and talk back to dogs.

Barks were able to be classified into one of six categories:

  • Stranger - When a new person enter the house.
  • Fight - When encouraged to bark by the dogs owner.
  • Walk - When preparing to go for a walk.
  • Alone - When left with no one around.
  • Ball - When the dogs owner was holding a ball or other toy.
  • Play - When playing with their owner.

Eotovos Lorand, University of Budapest ethologist, says, “you could use this method to analyze other vocal signals, such as bird songs, or categorize video recordings.”

Next up for the research group is to analyze the barks of working dogs, such as sheep dogs and hunting dogs.
