Remember when video game arcades were huge in the US years ago? Believe it or not they’re still big in Japan, or they were until very recently.

Namco Bandai has announced that it will be closing down 50 - 60 of its arcades in Japan, which is roughly one-fifth of their locations.

Sega Sammy also recently announced plans to close around 100 of their own arcades in Japan.

The reason? They’re blaming the Nintendo Wii.

Yuji Machida, spokesperson for Namco Bandai , said, “a lot of these games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home.”

Machida believes that many kids are now saving their money to buy accessories and games for their Wii.
