Polaroid has announced today that they will be closing factories in Massachusetts, Mexico and the Netherlands and cutting 450 jobs as the company attempts refocus itself. The new focus will not include the famous Polaroid self-developing film.
Polaroid self-developing film will remain in stores through next year, after which time the only major maker of instant film will be Fujifilm.
At its peak in 1978, Polaroid employed nearly 21,000 people. After these reductions the company will have 150 employees left.
Tom Beaudoin, president of Polaroid, said that they are “trying to reinvent Polaroid so it lives on for the next 30 to 40 years.”
What’s next for Polaroid?
Digital photography and portable printers using technology from Zink Imaging, while continuing to make TVs, DVD players, digital photo frames, and MP3 players.
