$100 price drop coming to iPhone, iPod Touch?

According to a 9to5Mac tipster, Apple may be planning a $100 price drop on the iPhone and iPod touch and the 8GB iPod Touch will be dropped from the lineup.

That would make the new pricing:

iPhone
8GB old pice: $399, new price: $299
16GB old price: $499, new price: $399

iPod Touch
8GB dropped
16GB old price: $399, new price: $299
32GB old price: $499, new price: $399

9 to 5 Mac also speculated that the 8GB iPhone may also be dropped, although they did point point out that this was not part of the tip they received.

Why would Apple drop the price?

RAM prices have continued to fall, plus the 3G iPhone is expected later this year. The price will need to be adjusted so that the 3G iPhone can be priced competitively and the other models can remain price competitive.

Personally I can’t see any price drop happening before the 3G iPhone is announced. Apple loves money as much as any company does. Dropping the price too early would result in decreased profits for no good reason. Waiting until the 3G iPhone drops before the prices drop makes the most sense.
