According to a story at Reuters, a source at Toshiba has told them that the company is in the final stages of planning for an exit from the HD DVD business.
This move mean Toshiba would cease development and production of HD DVD hardware and software, and would close its DVD factory in Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
As a result of these moves, some are saying that Toshiba stands to lose hundreds of millions of US dollars.
Still no press release from Toshiba regarding this so technically the news isn’t official, but that is expected soon.
In case there was any doubt, it looks like Blu-ray is the winner of the high definition disc format war.
UPDATE: If you have been waiting for official word from Toshiba about this, here it is.

This is so depressing. I just bought my new laptop with an HD DVD-ROM. Oh well. At least I didn’t replace my DVD player yet! Holding out for that universal all-in-one device that holds my Tivo, mp3player, gaming system, movie downloads AND high def DVD player. Screw Blu-Ray.
I hate to see HD DVD go too…I really like the format.
