Sony, Sharp get together for LCD HDTV panel production

Sharp and Sony have agreed to create a joint venture to produce LCD panels at a new $3.5 billion plant being built in Sakai, located in western Japan.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sharp will spin off its LCD panel facilities to the new plant which it will co-own with Sony. Sharp will hold a 66% majority ownership in the plant.

The new plant is expected to open in March 2010 and have the capability to produce up to 72,000 HDTVs per month.
