Microsoft lowered Vista requirements to help Intel sell chipsets

If you’ve been following the class-action lawsuit against Microsoft over the whole “Vista Capable” mess you might have asked yourself how it happened.
158 pages from “Exhibit A” of the lawsuit have been unsealed by the judge and what they reveal is interesting and damning: Intel’s 915 chipset was initially rejected as being compatible with Vista.
A huge number of computers that received the “Vista Capable” sticker had the 915 chipset.
According to the emails, Microsoft admits that “In the end, we lowered the requirements to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 graphics embedded…we are caving to Intel. We worked the last 18 months to drive the UI experience and we are giving this up.”
If you have a lot of free time and want to check out the emails yourself you can find them in a PDF here.
