Apple’s Time Capsule hits retail

apple_time_capsuleApple’s Time Capsule product, announced at MacWorld a few weeks ago, has finally hit retail and early opinions of it are positive.

It looks like an AirPort Extreme base station, there’s a good reason for it–its more or less an AirPort Extreme base station with an internal hard drive.

The Time Capsule supports both Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11a/b/g and n draft 2.0 wireless networking, has a USB port for sharing a printer or external hard drive, and comes in two capacities:

  • 500GB for $299
  • 1TB for $499

Gizmodo has posted some info and early test results and they call it “a worthwhile product for people who have the money and want the convenience.”

If you’re using a Mac with Leopard, especially a laptop, you might want to check out Time Capsule for holding your Time Machine backups. Sure, you could connect an external hard drive to the USB port on an AirPort Extreme and use that to save a few bucks, but that requires a hack to get working and even then it seems to be a bit flaky.
