If you’re in the market for a digital SLR but don’t want to break the bank, the new Olympus Evolt E-420 might be worth looking at.
Olympus calls it the “world’s smallest and lightest DSLR” and relative to the size of some other DSLR’s it is pretty small. The E-420 measures 5.1 x 3.6 x 2.1 inches and weighs in at 13.4 ounces, making it a bit smaller and lighter than the next smallest DSLR, the Canon Rebel XSi 450D.
Senior marketing manager at Olympus John Knaur says, “the Olympus E-420 delivers the professional-grade image quality of a digital SLR with the simple operation of a point-and-shoot camera.”
Features of the E-420 include:
- 10-megapixel sensor
- 2.7-inch LCD with Live View
- Autofocus
- Face detection
- 3.5 frames per second in sequenced shooting mode
- Dust removal system
- Supports CompactFlash Type I and II, Microdrives, and xD cards
The E-420 will be available in May in three different configuration:
E-420 body only: $499.99
E-420 with ED 14-42mm lens: $599.99
E-420 with ED 25mm lens: $699.99

wow, so how does this compare to the E-510? I was looking at the 510 to buy, but now I may sit back and wait for this one. Any thoughts?
The E-510 seems pretty nice too…except for the minor size difference and the lack of face detection on the E-510 (though I might be wrong on this) they seem very similar.
I found a post at dpreview that might help you out–it has the press release from Olympus and a table listing the specs of the E-420:
