According to InfoWorld, Sun sees no reason why a JVM (Java Virtual Machine) couldn’t run on the iPhone.

Eric Klein, VP of Java marketing at Sun, says “we’re going to make sure that the JVM offers the Java applications as much access to the native functionality of the iPhone as possible.”

If Java is going to come to the iPhone it will be through the upcoming App Store, but how would Steve Jobs feel about that? According to the New York Times, Jobs said “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

Wow, harsh words from someone normally so soft spoken (not).

No offense to Java fans and developers, but personally I can’t stand it. Desktop applications written in Java are generally slow and have the look and feel of something written 15-years ago.

I wouldn’t agree with Steve’s opinion that “nobody uses” Java–its hardly the Latin of programming languages and is still used for a lot of applications, mainly in-house developed apps.
