The upcoming 2.0 firmware release for the iPhone has already been hacked thanks to your friends at the iPhone Dev Team.
The recently released iPhone SDK ships with a copy of firmware 1.2 which will be released publicly as 2.0. The iPhone Dev Team has been able to successfully decrypt the firmware image and jailbreak the firmware.
The jailbroken firmware isn’t quite ready for prime time (it currently only works on iPhones with hacked activation so it won’t work on AT&T phones yet) but I’d bet they’re working on that.
For more info check out this thread.
UPDATE: Gizmodo just posted that “the hacked 1.2 firmware works with anything. AT&T and others, it’s pwned. And Apple will not really be able to patch it this time… somehow
“. I don’t see that in the thread I’m watching but maybe I missed it? Not sure what their source is but if you want to check out their full post you can find it here.
UPDATE 2: The iPhone Dev Team has released a video of the new firmware running on an iPhone. Check it out here if you’re interested.
