Philadelphia municipal Wi-Fi could be shutting down
In 2006 EarthLink won a contract to develop an aggressive municipal Wi-Fi deployment in Philadelphia, but now that service is in jeopardy.
After putting up $20 million to build up the network to 80 percent of their plan, the service has stopped accepting new subscribers and EarthLink has told the city to come up with a plan to take it over for themselves or EarthLink may have to shut it down.
EarthLink announced plans to leave the municipal Wi-Fi business last year after the death of their CEO Garry Betty and has already announced that it will be shutting down the municipal Wi-Fi service in New Orleans after the company could not find anyone willing to take it over.
