OLPC shows off first prototype of the next XO

olpc_xo_2 OLPC founder Nick Negroponte today showed off the first prototype of the next generation XO laptop.

The device will resemble a folding e-book reader and have two touch-sensitive screens that will be readable in sunlight.

OLPC CTO Mary Lou Jepsen says that “younger children will be able to use simple keyboards to get going, and older children will be able to switch between keyboards customized for applications as well as for multiple languages.”

The keyboard will be virtual as it is on Apple’s iPhone.

According to Negroponte it will be available in 2010 which sounds a bit ambitious to me if they want to keep the price reasonable for the intended consumers of this device, but maybe they know something we don’t.
